Scholarship Program

THE 38th Board of Directors, in 2002, established the Steven Garfinkel Scholarship Award to assist security professionals with their continuing education in the security field. Up to two scholarships are awarded each year, and payments are made directly to the learning institution. This scholarship is open to both NCMS members and non-members.

THE 46th Board of Directors, in 2010, accepted another scholarship into its program. This one was established and funded by Ray Semko, a long time supporter of the Society and a regular speaker at the Annual Training Seminar, to also assist security professionals with their continuing education in the security field. One scholarship is awarded each year, and payments are made directly to the learning institution. This scholarship is also open to both NCMS members and non-members.

Rules and Guidelines

The NCMS Board of Directors established the Steven Garfinkel Scholarship Award to assist security professionals with their continuing education in the security field. This scholarship is open to both members and non-members.

1. GENERAL

  1. Frequency. NCMS will award up to two scholarships to qualified students annually to be utilized at an accredited college or university.
  2. Selection. The Awards Committee will determine the students to be awarded a scholarship.
  3. Value. The value of the scholarship will be $2,500.00.
  4. Disclaimer. NCMS reserves the right to deny an annual scholarship award due to the financial status of the organization. The determination to award the scholarships will be based upon a review of the current annual budget by the NCMS Treasurer and Executive Director.
  5. An individual is eligible for one scholarship per year
  6. Applicants must be a full time undergraduate student or currently employed in a security-related position (at least 10% of his/her time) either in a commercial company, the U.S. Government or the U.S military. In addition, applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university.
2. SELECTION CRITERIA
    The following criteria will be considered in the selection of the scholarship award winners from among the applications submitted:
  1. Membership in NCMS
  2. Current enrollment in a security related degree or certification.
  3. Academic performance, as reflected by the unofficial transcript showing grade point average.
  4. Financial needs and access to other sources of financial assistance.
  5. Attainment of professional certifications such as the ISP, CPP, PCI, CISSP, etc.
  6. Status as a military veteran.
  7. Professional career aspirations once the degree is obtained, with a priority given to those who will remain in the security field.
  8. Current members of the NCMS Board of Directors and their families are excluded from consideration.
3. APPLICATIONS
  1. Applications will be submitted to the Executive Director no later than May 15 at:

  2. The application must be submitted via email, mail or fax and include the following information:
    • Name,
    • Mailing address,
    • Telephone number,
    • E-mail address,
    • Current employment (company and position),
    • Area of study and institution attending,
    • Short Essay explaining why applicant is applying for this scholarship and how he/she plans to use his/her education,
    • How the money will be used,
    • List of two references (include name, address and phone number).
  3. Scholarship funds may be used for tuition and/or books only. Please see “payments” section below for instructions on disbursement.
  4. The Awards Committee will review submitted applications and select winners by the annual training seminar each year.
4. PAYMENTS
Once the scholarship is awarded, the NCMS Executive Director will coordinate with the scholarship winner to determine disbursement of funds. Tuition will be paid directly to the college or university. If recipient is using the scholarship funds for reimbursement of books, original receipts will need to be submitted. In both cases, a class schedule is required prior to disbursement of funds. Note: All funds must be used in the year the scholarship is awarded. Funds may not be carried over beyond December 31.

The Ray Semko Scholarship Award is established to assist security professionals with their continuing education in the security field and to encourage young people to enter the security profession. This scholarship is open to both members and non-members.

1. GENERAL

  1. Frequency. One scholarship may be awarded to qualified students annually to be utilized at an accredited college or university. Should there be no candidates by May 15, no award will be made for that year. Scholarships will be awarded only when funding is supplied to NCMS to administer. Should funding not be supplied NCMS, there will be no award that year.
  2. Selection. The Awards Committee will determine the students to be awarded a scholarship.
  3. Value. The value of the scholarship will be $1,000.00.
  4. An individual is eligible for one scholarship per year
