The NCMS Board of Directors established the Steven Garfinkel Scholarship to assist security professionals with their continuing education in the security field. This scholarship is open to both members and non-members.
General
Frequency
NCMS will award up to two scholarships to qualified students annually to be utilized at an accredited college or university.
Selection
The Awards Committee will determine the students to be awarded a scholarship.
Value
The value of the scholarship will be $2,500.00.
Disclaimer
NCMS reserves the right to deny an annual scholarship due to the financial status of the organization. The determination to award the scholarships will be based upon a review of the current annual budget by the NCMS Treasurer and Executive Director.
An individual is eligible for one scholarship per year.
Selection Criteria
The following criteria will be considered in the selection of the scholarship winners from among the applications submitted:
- Membership in NCMS
- Current enrollment in a security related degree or certification.
- Academic performance, as reflected by the unofficial transcript showing grade point average.
- Financial needs and access to other sources of financial assistance.
- Attainment of professional certifications such as the ISP, CPP, PCI, CISSP, etc.
- Status as a military veteran.
- Professional career aspirations once the degree is obtained, with a priority given to those who will remain in the security field.
- Current members of the NCMS Board of Directors and their families are excluded from consideration.

The application must be submitted via email, mail or fax and include the following information:
- Name,
- Mailing address,
- Telephone number,
- E-mail address,
- Current employment (company and position),
- Area of study and institution attending,
- Short Essay explaining why applicant is applying for this scholarship and how he/she plans to use his/her education,
- How the money will be used,
- List of two references (include name, address and phone number).
Scholarship funds may be used for tuition and/or books only. Please see “payments” section below for instructions on disbursement.
The Awards Committee will review submitted applications and select winners by the annual training seminar each year.

Payments
Once the scholarship is awarded, the NCMS Executive Director will coordinate with the scholarship winner to determine disbursement of funds. Tuition will be paid directly to the college or university. If recipient is using the scholarship funds for reimbursement of books, original receipts will need to be submitted. In both cases, a class schedule is required prior to disbursement of funds.
